FUNDING BOOST TO BETTER SUPPORT ADULT SURVIVORS OF CHILDHOOD TRAUMA AND ABUSE

02/07/2010

An organisation that has provided support services for over 3,500 survivors of childhood trauma and abuse has received $50,000 from the Australian Government to continue this important work.

Mayumarri is a community-based organisation that helps sufferers of childhood abuse become survivors through healing programs and improving access to a range of support services and networks.

It is run predominately by survivors of childhood trauma and abuse and operates nationally from four centres in Cooyar, Queensland; Bunbury, Western Australia; Melbourne, Victoria and the Hunter Valley in New South Wales.

This funding aims to build the capacity of general counselling services so they can better respond to the special needs of adult survivors and ensure people needing support can access appropriate services regardless of where they live.

It will be used by Mayumarri to operate an outreach education program of up to eight workshops across Australia over the next 12 months for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

These workshops will give survivors access to localised support services including community-based recovery and treatment programs.

Since Mayumarri first opened its doors in 1999, it has helped thousands of men and women deal with all forms of childhood trauma including abandonment, neglect, and sexual, physical, emotional, spiritual and ritual abuse.

The Australian Government acknowledges the importance of this work in helping sufferers of childhood trauma and abuse gain access to support and services that helps improve their quality of life.

Protecting children at risk demands national leadership – all children deserve a safe, healthy and happy childhood.

The Australian Government has provided $61.6 million over four years to help protect Australia's vulnerable children from child abuse and neglect under the National Framework for Protecting Australia's Children 2009-2020.

The Framework provides a long-term agenda to improving the safety and wellbeing of Australia’s children through partnerships with the non-government sector.

Providing support services for sufferers of childhood trauma and abuse is a national priority under this Framework.
